Thursday show and tell.

Browsing through my photo's I saw these ones again. I believe they were made 2 years ago, when the water in the river IJssel was very high some time during the winter. In the back of the photo's you can see my city.

It kind of looks like the big boat will go over the cars afar. And the trees just growing out of the water. And look at that traffic sign, no cars and motors allowed here in the water...

Some roads were flooded, I remember. I had to take a different road home than I normally do. The IJssel was so very  wide.

When you look at these photo's it is easy to depict that we here in the Netherlands do have our difficulties with the water. But I do love these pictures.

  1. The photos are amazing! I understand what over-flowing rivers can do. I've experienced 3 feet of water in my office from a hurricane. The clean-up seems impossible when you first see it after the water has subsided. But life goes on....

    1. Hello Meggie, luckily enough I've never experienced an over-flowing in my house or so, and I'm very happy now our house is build on sand banks. I can imagine the mess and the work, cause it sometimes happens here in Holland. Groetjes, Gerda

    1. Hello Meredith, I used to live for 20 years in Amsterdam, I came to live there when I went to university. I loved the city, but after 20 years, and with 2 little children, it was enough and I moved in 1997 to a little city nearby Amsterdam. And now I live in the east of Holland. But to American standards I suppose this is still nearby. I mean, we live in a litttle country. Nice to read you loved it in Amsterdam and around. Groetjes, Gerda

  3. They are beautiful. Even Italy, the country of the sun, lately has some problems with the water. It's always raining.

  5. I enjoyed seeing the area around you too, Gerda! For 15 years I lived on the west bank of the Hudson River in NY. We did not have to contend with flooding, but know that others on lower land down the street from us had to, which was very difficult for them. Thanks for sharing your photos :-)

  7. Toen wij aan de IJssel woonden, was het soms ook zo hoog. Ik vond het altijd eng!
